Surprising Facts about Donating To Wildlife Charities
Why Giving Matters—And Why Wildlife Needs Us Now

I have a Senegalese friend who now lives in the United States working as an African drummer, and his daily act of kindness always brings me back to why donating to wildlife charities is so vital today. Every morning, he walks the streets of Los Angeles, searching for someone with less than he has, and offers one of the few dollars he possesses. Then, he reaches into his pocket and offers one of the few dollars he possesses.

When I once asked, “Why do you do that every day?” his answer was simple.

“I have to,” he said.

For Bara, generosity isn’t optional—it’s cultural, expected, and woven into the fabric of community life. Throughout Africa, tithing or sharing what little you have—even when you are far from wealthy—is considered a moral responsibility.

Americans, too, are generous. In fact, the United States consistently ranks among the most philanthropic nations in the world. Yet one surprising truth remains: most charitable donations come not from the wealthiest people, but from those with the least to spare.

My dear friend Lynn Twist, author of The Soul of Money, has seen this firsthand. The majority of donations arrive in small, meaningful amounts—one, ten, fifty dollars—offered by people who give because it feels good, because it’s right, and because it connects them to something bigger than themselves.

The Surprising Gap in Animal Charity Giving

But here’s a statistic few people know:
Only two cents of every dollar donated by Americans goes to animal charities. Two cents! That tiny slice includes everything—wildlife conservation, humane societies, shelters, climate work, and zoological organizations.

And yet, this is the moment when donations to wildlife charities are needed the most.

Scientists warn that we have entered the sixth mass extinction, losing species faster than at any point in human history. This grim reality was the driving force behind both of my books—Saving Wild: Inspiration From 50 Leading Conservationists and Wild Lives. After more than forty years working alongside wildlife organizations and conservation leaders, I have never seen a more urgent time to support animal charities.

Donating To Wildlife Charities That Won’t Waste Your Money

One challenge donors face is knowing which wildlife organizations are truly making an impact. With so many nonprofits competing for attention, it’s hard to know where your dollars will do the most good. Charity Navigator and similar platforms offer a start, but they cover only a portion of nonprofits—mostly U.S.-based—and often miss the nuanced, on-the-ground impact that matters most in conservation.

So I’ve done the work for you.

My Curated List for Your Wildlife Donations

To make donating to animal charities easier, I’ve compiled a list of 20 of the most effective, trustworthy, and inspiring conservation organizations working across the globe. These NGOs protect endangered species, preserve wild habitats, empower local communities, and defend the natural world in ways that truly move the needle.

Many of them I’ve worked with personally. Many I’ve supported through donations—both individually and through Saving Wild. All of them are deeply respected in their field and capable of turning your generosity into real, measurable impact.

Never doubt that you are needed.

Sharing shocking photos on social media may get attention, but it fuels the darker, more sensationalized side of conservation. What truly helps is donating to wildlife charities – supporting the organizations doing the daily work of rescuing animals, restoring habitats, educating communities, and fighting for a future where wildlife can thrive.

No amount is too small.
Give yourself the gift of giving.
